Argentina has finished the Davis Cup World Group first round by defeating the Brazil on Monday by 3-2. And it has entered into quarterfinals which will commence in July. However, Argentina will face Serbia in the quarters.
World number 83 Federico Delbonis herculean performance at the event led Argentina to step in Quarters. This four time finalist defeated Brazil’s Thomaz Bellucci with 6-3, 3-6, 6-2, 7-5.
On Sunday, Leonardo Mayer defended the hopes of Argentina in the longest combat ever in the singles rubber competition. Mayer defeated Brazil’s Joao Souza in the tie that finished with 15-13 in the fifth set and lasted six hours and 43 minutes. However, the earlier tie record was a six-hour-22-minute, between John McEnroe and Mats Wilander in the 1982 quarterfinals.
Leo’s match was the second longest tour-level singles match. John Isner and Nicolas Mahut’s had battled for 11-hours at Wimbledon in 2010, which is standing at the top in the history.
Delbonis said that – “Leo’s win allowed me to play today for the victory, Thanks to the crowd for their support.”
